Each DuckTail child has their own journal in the classroom. The journals are used for writing practice. Each week a new letter is introduced and the children practice writing that letter in their journals, as well as simple words and pictures. Journal writing gives children relevant opportunities to learn the conventions of print such as: a)print goes from left to right; b) there is a difference between pictures and text; c) print goes from the top to the bottom of a page; d) letters make up words, and other rules of the written language. Writing in their journals gives children an opportunity to experiment with letters and letter sounds. It also gives them time to practice their fine motor skills. The DuckTails are always very proud of their journal work, and the journal shows the improvement each child makes throughout the year.
