Karen explained to all of the ELC children that the Kindergarteners have been learning about volcanoes and they were going to share what they had learned

“Gas comes out of a volcano”

“Earthquakes can happen before a volcano erupts”

“Volcanoes can sleep and then come awake” – we used baking soda to help make our volcano come awake.

“You know a volcano is going to erupt when ash comes out”

: Baking soda is used to prime to volcano.

Flower Fundraiser 2013

Despite the recent snow fall, it’s time to start thinking Spring! TLC ELC kicked off its annual Flower Sale Fundraiser on March 4. Orders are due by Monday, March 25, and flowers will be available for pick up at TLC ELC on Thursday, May 16 between 1pm and 6pm.

The Lord be with you…

Twice a month, the children and staff of TLC ELC attend a worship service. The services are led by Renee Jefferson (director of education at Transfiguration Lutheran Church), Pastor Stephanie and Tay Wilson (youth and family minister at Transfiguration). Children learn about God through stories and music. Last week we learned about the Good Samaritan. We also talked a little about the season of Lent, and how we don’t say “Halleluia” during this season…(This also means we can not sing one of our favorite songs “Hallelu, Hallelu”. Each class had the words “Halleluia” on a sheet of paper, and we placed all of the “Halleluias” in a star box for safe keeping. We will open the box after Easter!!

Children’s Museum

The TLC Kindergarten class took a field trip to the Children’s Museum in St Paul.

The Kinders spent time with water play, crawling through “ant tunnles”, face painting and dramatic play. Such a fun day!

Spanish Class at TLC ELC

Every Friday, Miss Krista visits the Penguin, Chipmunk, Aardvark, DuckTape and Kindergarten classes for a Spanish Lesson.

The lessons vary from class to class, depending on age. The children learn colors, animals, days of the week and more through stories and songs.

Some of the things your child is learning:

Counting to Ten: (and beyond)
Uno, Dos, Tres Cuatro, Cinco, Sies, Siete, Ocho, Nueve, Diez

Colors:

Rojo, Azul, Verde, Amarillo, Cafe, Negro, Anaranjado, Morado...

And a favorite song:

A day in the life of a TLC Kindergartener

TLC ELC’s kindergarten begins each day with some outdoor (weather permitting ) large muscle time. Some days are free choice large muscle activities, and other days are teacher led activities.

The class then goes to the classroom to work on their journals. After they complete their journal activity, they share what they have written/drawn with a partner.

The Pledge of Allegiance.

Next, is group time. This includes, doing the calendar, using links and straws to count by 5′s and 10′s, stories and the weather chart.

The rest of the morning is spent doing a variety of activities, including, writing, math, science, sensory and art activities. On this particular day the class was studying the letter “J” . They practiced writing capital and lowercase J’s, talking about what words begin with the letter “J”, and doing some jumping activities (jumping 20 times, doing jumping jacks, measuring how far each child could jump).

Afternoon activities include, lunch, more large muscle time, field trips, free choice play and rest time.

Cold Weather Science

The cold temperatures on Monday caused the TAC staff to cancel the sledding field trip that was planned. Though the cold weather ruined field trip plans, it provided us with the perfect weather for a science lesson. What happens to HOT water when it is mixed with FREEZING temperatures?

Some of the kids’ guesses included: *the water will get cold*, *the water will freeze*, *the water will turn to steam*

Kindergarteners attend African Drum Ensemble

The TLC Kindergarten class took a trip to the Macalester College in St Paul. While there, they attended a performance of the African Drum Ensemble. The program showcased many different instruments including, drums (made from dried gourds of various shapes and sizes–), xylophones, flutes and more. One of the drums was 6 feet tall! The class also had the opportunity to see a few different ceremonial dances from the country of Ghana, including a funeral dance, and a coming of age dance. A few of our kindergarteners even got to join the performers on stage to learn a game played by children in Ghana. What a great show!
